JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - A federal judge has denied ex-U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown’s request to delay her sentencing on fraud and other convictions stemming from a charity used as a personal slush fund.
U.S. District Judge Timothy Corrigan denied Brown’s request Friday, saying medical records she had produced gave no reason to delaying her scheduled Nov. 16 sentencing.
It was the second time Corrigan denied a request for a delay. Brown had unsuccessfully argued earlier that Hurricane Irma disrupted her preparations for the hearing.
The former congresswoman was convicted of fraud and filing false tax returns related to One Door for Education, a charity purportedly organized to give scholarships to poor children, but which instead funneled money to Brown and others.
The 70-year-old Brown could spend the rest of her life in prison.
