SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Somali refugee who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting two Utah women at knifepoint when he was 14 has been sentenced to probation after serving a six-year term in juvenile detention.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports 20-year-old Mohammed Ali Mohammed told a judge Monday he was “a monster,” in 2011 but he is ready to show he’s become a different person. One detention-center volunteer testified he’d trust Mohammed with his life.
But prosecutors said he should serve adult prison time. A victim he sexually assaulted in her home said she is “terrified” of him being on the streets where she lives.
Judge Vernice Trease gave him five years of strict probation requiring weekly check-ins, no internet access and ankle monitoring. She says he’ll go to prison if he violates it.
