Sen. John Cornyn said Wednesday that Democrats need to craft amendments that can actually gain bipartisan support if they want to be part of the tax reform process.
“Sherrod Brown is on the Senate Finance Committee with me. Last Thursday night, we had an amendment process. He didn’t win a lot of his amendments, but you know, when you’re in the minority, that happens,” Mr. Cornyn, Texas Republican, said on CNN.
The Senate Majority Whip said that Democrats need to propose amendments that have a shot at passing and not just propose items they know Republicans will oppose.
“There’s still an opportunity for our Democratic colleagues during the vote today and on Thursday to participate,” Mr. Cornyn said. “We would love to have a bipartisan bill, but that’s really up to them.”
The Senate is in the process of getting their tax reform through to a full vote, and so far appears to only have Republican support. The bill passed the crucial step out of the Senate Budget Committee on Tuesday and senators hope to pass the bill this week.
