LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) - Deishaun Booker had 14 points, 12 assists and five rebounds to lead Long Beach State to a 74-69 win against Oregon State at the Advocare Invitational on Friday.
The two teams played last Saturday with Oregon State winning 89-81 at home.
Booker hit a 3-pointer with 1:28 remaining to give the 49ers a 68-63 lead and they sealed it at the free-throw line.
Gabe Levin added 14 points and five rebounds before fouling out with 2:53 remaining for LBSU (3-3), which shot 52 percent (13-of-25) in the second half.
“I’m really proud that they came back and didn’t pout about yesterday,” 49ers coach Dan Monson said. “They put it away and did something about it. So I thought we played hard and with great passion.”
Stephen Thompson Jr. led Oregon State (2-3) with 24 points and six rebounds while Tres Tinkle had 15 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out.
“We were worried about a little bit of a letdown because we beat them at home,” Beavers coach Wayne Tinkle said. “We felt like the margin should have been a little different (and) we didn’t finish it off.”
Oregon State was 3-of-24 on 3-pointers.
ANYWHERE, ANYTIME
Monson was not upset at the opportunity to play Oregon State a second time in less than a week even if it meant traveling 3,000 miles away to do it.
“It’s really tough in Division I basketball to get road wins,” Monson said. “That’s why these tournaments are so great because you get (Power 5) schools that won’t come to your place.”
BLOW THE WHISTLE
The teams combined for 47 total fouls and 50 trips to the free-throw line. Besides Tres Tinkle fouling out, the Beavers had four other players with four fouls apiece.
“If you look at it, they attacked a lot,” Wayne Tinkle said. “If you look at the fouls, we had five more fouls and they shot ten more free throws.”
BIG PICTURE
Oregon State: The Beavers didn’t get much offensive production from their bench, scoring just eight points on 2-of-6 shooting.
Long Beach State: The 49ers got a balanced attack offensively with Temidayo Yussuf scoring nine points and grabbing seven rebounds off the bench and Barry Ogalue adding nine points and five boards.
