PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island General Treasurer Seth Magaziner says more than 2,500 residents have requested their unclaimed property since he announced a new program to return forgotten money.
Magaziner launched “Your Money” this week to send checks to people who have unclaimed property, which can include forgotten bank accounts, stocks or insurance payments.
The treasurer’s office says about one in five Rhode Islanders has unclaimed property. In the past, people had to search a database and make a claim.
With the new program, the treasurer’s office is matching unclaimed property with known addresses and then sending a check automatically.
It says it still has money for many people whose current addresses haven’t been matched.
Magaziner says after the announcement, people searched the database and more than 2,500 additional claims were initiated.
