WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A review of public records has found that around 40 percent of the groups charged with overseeing and advising Wilmington’s city government are defunct.
The News Journal examined public records and found three dozen of the city’s boards and commissions are inactive.
Many of the organizations are required by city code to meet regularly and sometimes write reports. But documents show many haven’t convened in years, and in some cases, decades.
Among those that have gone inactive is the civil rights commission, which is supposed to address issues of discrimination.
Staff for Mayor Mike Purzycki say his office is reviewing all boards and commissions to determine what vacancies need to be filled, why some haven’t been meeting and which should be formally dissolved.
