FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) - A Riverside man was sentenced to three years in prison after authorities say he stole about $75,000 from his wife’s cousin and attempted to sell her house without the family’s knowledge.

The Press-Enterprise reports 67-year-old William Marion Carter pleaded guilty on Tuesday to nearly two dozen counts of forgery and dozens of other charges including elder abuse, attempted grand theft and money laundering.

Prosecutors say that when 73-year-old Carol Folz died, Carter posed as her brother and attempted to sell her Laguna Niguel house without the family’s authorization. A relative discovered what carter was doing and alerted authorities.

Prosecutors say Carter also had Folz cremated before the family was notified.
