SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A former Utah state employee won’t have to serve anymore jail time after he tried to blow the whistle on a Craigslist scam but ended up under arrest for soliciting sex from a purported teenage boy.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports Judge Thomas Fillmore gave 55-year-old Nicholas Deelstra credit for 73 days in jail and ordered him Monday to complete 60 hours of community service as part of a 36-month probation term.
Prosecutors say Deelstra told the FBI in August he solicited sex with a 16-year-old boy on Craigslist but the teen never showed up at his home in North Logan and a person claiming to be his father telephoned him the next day demanding money.
The ex-worker in the Utah Department of Workforce Services pleaded guilty in October to one count of attempted sexual exploitation of a minor.
