Redskins wide receiver Terrelle Pryor will be put on injured reserve after finding out he needs ankle surgery, coach Jay Gruden said Monday.
The news is the latest blow to Pryor, who has had a down season. The wide receiver signed a one-year, $6 million deal with the Redskins in March in hopes that he could parlay it into a bigger, multi-year contract.
But Pryor never got on the same page with quarterback Kirk Cousins and saw his role diminish throughout the year. He was benched for most of the first half in Week 7 against the Philadelphia Eagles, and lost his starting job to Josh Doctson.
Pryor said last week his foot had been bothering him since Week 2 against the Los Angeles Rams when safety Cody Davis delivered a low hit. Pryor met with noted foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson on Monday, who recommended and will conduct the surgery.
Pryor, who the Redskins hoped could help fill the loss of receivers Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson, finished the season with just 22 catches for 240 yards, a significant drop-off from his 1,000-yard plus year with the Cleveland Browns in 2016.
Pryor will be a free agent at the end of the season, meaning he likely won’t return to the Redskins next year.
Meanwhile, Gruden said running back Chris Thompson will receive surgery “soon” after suffering a broken fibula in Sunday’s 34-31 loss to the New Orleans Saints.
