BASTROP, Texas (AP) - A former Austin police officer could wind up on death row when he’s tried for capital murder for the fatal shooting of his pregnant girlfriend.

The Austin American-Statesman reports court documents show Bastrop County prosecutors will seek the death penalty for VonTrey Clark, who’s charged with the 2016 slaying of crime victims counselor Samantha Dean.

Clark was set to go on trial in March but District Judge Carson Campbell on Wednesday agreed to requests from defense attorneys and delayed the trial until February 2019.

That would be four years after Dean’s body was found behind a vacant building in Bastrop, east of Austin. Authorities have said Clark shot her because he didn’t want to pay child support.

Austin police fired Clark in July 2015 for insubordination and neglect of duty.
