WINDHAM, N.Y. (AP) - New multi-use trails have been established on state-owned forest land in the Catskills. The trails are being promoted as a mountain biking destination.
The trails are in the Elm Ridge Wild Forest in the town of Windham. The five miles of new trails bring the total to 25 miles in the tract. Construction was done by the Adirondack Mountain Club and the Windham Area Recreation Foundation.
Trails marked “fun loops” near the Route 23 trailhead have gentler slopes for beginning mountain bikers. The more challenging “levitate” trail climbs to the top of the ridge.
The Department of Environmental Conservation plans to enlarge the Elm Ridge parking area on Route 23 to hold up to 45 vehicles next spring. Windham High Peak is a popular destination from the parking area.
