NEW ORLEANS — Redskins running back Chris Thompson was carted off the field Sunday during the third quarter against the New Orleans Saints.
With 5:48 left in the quarter, Thompson’s right knee was rolled up on as quarterback Kirk Cousins went diving for the first down. The two collided — with their helmets hitting each other — and Thompson remained on the ground for several minutes.
Most of Thompson’s teammates came onto the field and were kneeling as the cart came out to get him. Thompson’s leg was put in an aircast and the running back burried his head into a towel as he was leaving the field.
If this is a serious energy, losing Thompson would be a huge blow for the Redskins. Emerging as the team’s first half MVP, Thompson led the Redskins in rushing and receiving yards.
He had a 16-yard receiving touchdown and 17 yards rushing against the Saints.
Cousins was also down after the play and was evaluated, but he returned on the play.
The Redskins lead 24-13 in the third quarter.
