PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A Portland, Maine, hospital’s plan for potential expansion is set to be considered by the City Council, but some nearby residents worry the outline could discourage other developers eyeing the same area.
The Portland Press Herald reports that Maine Medical Center’s request for an institutional overlay zone will be considered by the Portland City Council on Monday. It is a key step in a proposed $500 million expansion.
The long-term plan identifies sites that the hospital might consider buying but does not currently own. Critics worry that could dissuade other developers from even considering the area.
A spokesman for the hospital’s parent company says the plan just lays out design guidelines that the hospital would follow if it does expand. He says it doesn’t put any restrictions on other developers.
