BOSTON (AP) - MBTA officials have named the winning bid for the lead construction contract on the Green Line extension.
The Boston Globe reports that Green Line Constructors was chosen Friday to design and build the nearly 5-mile project that will extend the Green Line through Somerville and Medford. A formal vote is still needed.
Green Line Constructors is a consortium of several engineering and construction firms. Officials said the winning bid was $1.08 billion, well below a $1.3 billion ceiling set by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.
T officials streamlined the long-delayed project and asked for new bids after initial costs rose above $3 billion. The federal government has committed nearly $1 billion for the extension, part of a 1990 settlement that allowed the massive Big Dig highway project to go forward.
