ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Officials in New York are urging low-income families, seniors and individuals to sign up for home heating assistance before the temperatures drop this winter.
The application period for the federally funded home energy assistance program begins Monday.
More than $325 million is available this year for New Yorkers who qualify for the program. For example, a family of four must make less than $53,500 to be eligible.
The program is designed to ensure that no New York family has to survive the winter without heat because they can’t pay their utility bill.
Republican state Sen. Joseph Griffo of Rome says New Yorkers can go online to mybenefits.ny.gov or stop by a local state social services office to sign up.
