SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (AP) - Nurses at a South Lake Tahoe hospital are set to vote in an election that will determine if they join a union.
The vote set for Tuesday and Wednesday could leave the nursing staff at Barton Health as the only unionized employees at one of the area’s largest employers.
The hospital opposes the effort by some nurses to join the California Nurses Association. Barton Health CEO Dr. Clint Purvance told the Tahoe Daily Tribune that a direct and open working relationship with nurses, without a third party like the union involved, is best.
Union organizer Jennifer Lemmon says the work environment at the hospital “is not great” and that management is trying to divide the nursing staff.
A unionization effort nearly 30 years ago failed.
