ASHBURN — Redskins left tackle Trent Williams did something Friday he hadn’t been able to do in recent weeks — he practiced.
Williams, who has been dealing with knee soreness since Week 4 against the Kansas City Chiefs, practiced for the first time since Saturday, Oct. 21. It was just Williams’ second practice since suffering the injury.
Williams was listed as questionable Friday for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings after missing the last Redskins’ last two games.
“It’s alright,” Williams said. “I just wanted to get a little measuring stick to see how it felt to move around and do football activities.”
At some point, Williams will need surgery to repair a torn ligament in his knee. The tackle has been trying to delay the surgery until the end of the season.
After re-aggravating his injury in Philadelphia three weeks ago, the Redskins and Williams agreed to cut off football activity to see if rest would help manage the pain. Third-string tackle T.J. Clemmings has started in Williams’ place.
Williams said he’ll be a game-time decision. He was able to participate in individual drills and in some team activity.
“I feel a little better than the last couple of weeks, but there is still some uncertainty there,” Williams said.
Redskins coach Jay Gruden said it was nice to see Williams practice.
“The big thing with him is, one he has to feel comfortable enough we can be effective,” Gruden said. “He’s played at such a high level his whole career, I think with the pain he has been having he just doesn’t feel like himself. If he feels like he can go, I’m sure he will go.”
Matt Ioannidis out
Redskins defensive lineman Matt Ioannidis will miss his second straight game Sunday as he was ruled out against the Vikings with a hand injury.
Ioannidis fractured his hand two weeks ago in the 33-19 loss against the Dallas Cowboys. The defensive lineman had surgery last week to repair his fourth metacarpal, but didn’t practice this week. While he theoretically could have played with a cast, Ioannidis has yet to receive medical clearance.
11 players questionable
Besides Williams, the Redskins have 10 other players listed as questionable for Minnesota.
Offensive linemen Shawn Lauvao (stinger), Ty Nsekhe (core muscle), Spencer Long (knee), Morgan Moses (ankle) and Brandon Scherff (knee) were all limited participants in practice Friday.
Wide receiver Jamison Crowder (hamstring) said Thursday he will play. Tight end Jordan Reed, meanwhile, sat out of practice Friday after being limited the last two days.
“(We’re) just trying to get him where he feels good about running,” Gruden said. “Give him another day of rest. He had to work with the trainers and strength coach and we’ll see where he is tomorrow.”
Tight end Niles Paul is still in concussion protocol.
Linebacker Zach Brown (ankle), wide receiver Brian Quick (concussion) and safety Montae Nicholson (shoulder) are also listed as questionable.
