TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - The Democratic candidate for governor has received the maximum amount of public matching funds at $9.3 million.

The New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission says Phil Murphy reached the limit Wednesday.

His GOP rival, Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, has received just $3.3 million by comparison.

Both agreed to the public matching funds, which allow candidates to get $2 for every $1 raised once they reach the $430,000 threshold. But candidates are capped by state law from getting more than $9.3 million and from spending $13.8 million in the general election.

Matching funds are financed through donations from state income tax forms and through the general fund.

Murphy leads Guadagno in polls and fundraising ahead of Tuesday’s race to succeed term-limited GOP Gov. Chris Christie.
