LEWISTON, Maine (AP) - Lewiston, Maine, Mayor Robert Macdonald is telling the city’s Somali community not to be alarmed by a mailing playing on immigrants’ deportation fears.
Macdonald said Tuesday that he received one of the postcards suggesting that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is planning to deport immigrants.
But he said legal immigrants need not be alarmed.
Thousands of Somalis have moved to Maine’s second-largest city looking for a safe place to live. All told, more than 5,000 Africans have come to Lewiston since February 2001.
