BALTIMORE (AP) - Baltimore police say a teacher who was caught on video striking an 11-year-old student at a local elementary school has turned himself in on assault charges.

Police spokesman T.J. Smith says 29-year-old Taurean Branch has been charged with child abuse and second-degree assault after he was caught on video hitting a student in the midsection at Waverly Elementary/Middle School.

Police say Branch was a teacher at the school and that the student was crying and banging on a desk prior to the incident, which took place on Friday afternoon. Police say Branch turned himself in on Tuesday.

Police say the Baltimore school police initially responded on Friday before Baltimore police opened their own investigation on Monday.
