NEW TOWN, N.D. (AP) - The Three Affiliated Tribes in North Dakota are preparing for the grand opening of their $17.2 million law enforcement center and tribal court building in New Town.

Mark Fox, chairman of the Three Affiliated Tribes, said the facility will host its grand opening Tuesday and is going to make a strong impact that will be a significant step in protecting the communities and people.

It’s a long time coming and long overdue,” said Fox.

Fox said the reservation lost its tribal courthouse during the 1950s in the flood of Garrison Dam that created Lake Sakakawea

“These are things that we need. Our law enforcement has been using a small section of the New Town city hall and, with this, we will have our own top-notch facility at a very critical time,” he said.

The law enforcement center includes 33 offices, emergency 911 communications center with six dispatch stations, a combat training room and temporary holding cells. The courthouse includes 35 offices and three courtrooms.

“When we have these in dilapidated buildings, people think nothing important goes on there,” Fox said. “This is a building to command respect.”

The building will also feature a ceremonial rotunda and traditional artwork.

The Three Affiliated Tribes are planning to create other facilities, including an attended care facility for up to 12 children and juveniles.
