MANASSAS, Va. (AP) - About 1,500 businesses in the City of Manassas will be receiving a tax refund.
The city said Wednesday it has discovered that its property-tax rate for businesses the last three years was too high under state law.
As a result, businesses will be given a refund, with interest.
City spokeswoman Patty Prince said the amount will vary depending on the size of the business, but the city expects the refunds to cost the city about $850,000.
That would result in an average refund of nearly $570 if spread across all 1,500 businesses in the city.
The city said it will take several months to research and process the refunds.
