12:30 p.m.

San Jose police say a man shot his ex-girlfriend’s parents dead at their home before he turned the gun on police and was shot and killed by an officer.

The Mercury News (https://bayareane.ws/2pKKU3V ) reports Chief Eddie Garcia said Thursday that the man had a history of mental illness and domestic violence. He said the ex-girlfriend had a restraining order against the gunman.

She was not in the house at the time.

The couple’s 13-year-old son was inside the home, but the gunman released him during the Wednesday night confrontation. Garcia said the 911 call was made by the couple’s adult son, who escaped the house.

The police chief said an officer shot and killed the gunman when he pointed a gun from inside the house at officers.
