SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Gov. Susana Martinez says she has a plan that will fund New Mexico’s colleges and universities while providing more money for scholarships and the University of New Mexico’s cancer center.
The Republican governor on Thursday reiterated the highlights of her plan without offering details other than to say it would involve tax reform and that tax hikes were off the table. She said New Mexicans have no appetite for higher taxes.
Martinez said she hopes lawmakers can get behind the proposal when they return to Santa Fe for a special session that has yet to be called.
In early April, the governor vetoed all state spending on higher education institutions amid an escalating feud with the Democratic-led Legislature over how to resolve a state budget crisis.
The state Supreme Court is considering whether to overturn that veto.
