FOLSOM, Calif. (AP) - Rescue crews have recovered the body of a 14-year-old boy who went missing while playing with friends in a Northern California river.

The Sacramento Bee reports (https://bit.ly/2qubwcb) divers on Wednesday found Michael Powell’s body about 50 feet from where he was last seen jumping off rocks into the American River in Folsom.

The eighth-grader at Andrew Carnegie Middle School in Orangevale disappeared Monday.

Relatives told the newspaper they didn’t know the teenager, who was intellectually disabled and had a speech and hearing impediment, planned to head to the riverfront.

They say they suspect a parent of a neighborhood boy drove the teen and a group of friends about 2 miles away to the riverfront and left them there.

Authorities say a California State Parks department’s investigator was brought in to find out what happened but that that review is not a criminal investigation.
