SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Salt Lake City college professor who co-founded the Utah League of Native American Voters is running for Republican Orrin Hatch’s U.S. Senate seat.

James Singer launched his campaign this week, saying he wants to work on income inequality, gender inequality and racism in the U.S., along with environmental causes.

The 34-year-old told The Salt Lake Tribune (https://bit.ly/2pJRAPM) that he thinks Hatch is out of touch with his constituents, particularly because of his push to repeal Bears Ears National Monument.

Singer, a member of the Navajo Nation, says repealing the monument is at odds with the wishes of local tribes who called for the monument.

Hatch, the long-serving Senate Republican, pledged in 2012 that his current term would be his last but now says he’s considering running again.
