A California woman says she is satisfied with a nearly $1 million settlement her lawyers negotiated with Oakland to settle claims that police officers sexually abused her while she worked as an underage prostitute.
The city agreed Wednesday to pay $989,000 to settle the claims that led to the resignation of a police chief last summer and caused turmoil in the department already under federal court supervision.
The woman’s lawyer says she has similar legal claims pending against three other San Francisco Bay Area police departments and two sheriffs’ offices caught up in the sexual-abuse scandal involving two dozen officers.
The woman is now 19 and spoke at a news conference about the settlement.
The Associated Press generally doesn’t identify victims of sexual crimes.
