BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Federal Emergency Management Agency is cutting off a program that paid for thousands of Louisiana families to stay in hotels and motels after last summer’s historic flooding.
Wednesday was the deadline for victims of August’s floods to check out of their government-subsidized rooms.
FEMA has covered the lodging costs for more than 4,300 households over the past nine months. FEMA spokesman Jake Conley said 73 households were still enrolled in the Transitional Sheltering Assistance program as of Tuesday.
Conley said caseworkers will continue to assist residents with finding permanent housing.
Tens of thousands of homes in south Louisiana were damaged or destroyed by flooding from a storm that dumped as much as 2 feet of rain on part of the region.
