OPINION:
ISIS terrorists targeted a popular ice cream shop in Baghdad for their next hit, detonating a bomb in the nighttime hours where families — families with children — went for a snack to mark the end of the day’s Ramadan fast.
It’s the religion of peace, at it again.
Initially, nine were reported killed. The death count quickly rose to 15. And it’s likely to rise again, Iraqi forces said. Roughly 27 were injured.
A second bomb blast from a car parked by the Public Pension Office in Baghdad’s bustling Shawaka region killed nine and injured 15.
This is Ramadan, ISIS style.
The ice cream shop was busy, filled with families. A closed-circuit camera clip of the explosion shows the streets were filled with cars when a nearby vehicle blows up, sending massive fireballs into the ice cream shop. Shortly after, the bloody wounded fill the streets.
“[ISIS] wants Iraqis to fear going out and this is to show they are still present and able to strike the heart of the Iraqi capital, even as they are being defeated on the battlefield,” Hayder al-Khoei, a London-based Middle East expert, told Al Jazeera.
The blast comes as ISIS, in the lead-up to Ramadan, called for attacks on the West.
