PANAMA CITY — The lawyer for the family of former Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega said the family held a private memorial ceremony for the ex-leader Tuesday, but the remains were not cremated as a family friend reported.
Attorney Ezra Angel said Noriega’s remains were taken to the crematorium but have not yet been incinerated. He says cremation is planned for Wednesday.
Earlier, family friend Ruben Murgas told reporters the memorial ceremony lasted several hours and was quite emotional. He said the remains had been cremated.
Noriega died Monday at a public hospital at age 83 after spending all but the last few months of his final years in a Panamanian prison. He was in intensive care for more than two months after a hemorrhage following an operation to remove a brain tumor.
