BOSTON (AP) - Gov. Charlie Baker is seeking a number of changes in the state’s unemployment insurance system.
Legislation filed by the administration on Tuesday would allow the spouses of relocated military personnel to collect unemployment benefits if their spouse’s new assignment has forced them to leave their current job.
The bill also seeks to clarify state law by declaring that recent prison inmates are not eligible for collecting unemployment benefits after the completion of a prison work-release program.
Other provisions are designed to allow the state to recover fraudulently paid benefits more quickly and save postage costs by communicating electronically with recipients, such as through email.
In a statement, Baker, a Republican, says the proposals will ensure equity for those who are out of work and employers who pay into the system.
