MANDAN, N.D. (AP) - Memorial Day is being marked in North Dakota with the annual ceremony at the state Veterans Cemetery south of Mandan.

The free event hosted by the National Guard begins at noon. This year’s theme is “75 years of Honor-the 164th Infantry Regiment.” It commemorates 75 years since the North Dakota Guard unit gained fame by supporting U.S. Marines at Guadalcanal in World War II.

This year’s keynote speaker is Staff Sgt. Louis Hanson, a veteran of the 164th.

The Guard’s 188th Army Band’s brass quintet also will perform, and two Black Hawk helicopters will honor fallen soldiers with a flyover of the cemetery.
