SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - The Latest on a police shooting that left one man dead in San Jose, Calif. (all times local):

Police in San Jose say officers fatally shot a man after he charged at them with an ax during a confrontation at a downtown apartment.
Police Chief Eddie Garcia said several officers were responding to reports of a disturbance inside the unit and saw flames and smoke coming from underneath the front door.
He said when they forced the door open they were confronted by the axe-wielding suspect. He said the man initially dropped the axe, but then did not comply with the officers’ commands.
The chief said the officers then tried to subdue the suspect with a stun gun, but it had no effect on him. He said the man then picked up the axe and moved toward the officers, prompting an officer to fire at him.
The suspect was taken to the hospital where he died. Police said he had been committed to a mental institution and has a criminal record including violence, weapons and drugs charges.

Sgt. Enrique Garcia says the shooting happened following a report of a disturbance early Sunday.
He didn’t immediately have additional details.
