The remains of a U.S. Navy pilot killed when his plane was shot down during the Vietnam War have been brought to San Diego for burial.
The family of Lt. Cmdr. Frederick Crosby watched Friday as his casket was removed from a Delta Air Lines jet at San Diego’s airport and six sailors transferred it to a hearse.
Daughter Deborah Crosby touched the flag-draped casket and hugged her three brothers. The aviator’s sister Sharon and brother David also embraced.
Frederick Crosby was 31 when his aircraft was shot down in 1965. He was missing until military investigators found his remains a year ago.
Burial is scheduled for Sunday at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery with full military honors and a Navy flyover

A daughter who has worked for more than half a century on getting her father’s remains recovered from Vietnam after his Navy plane was shot down there in 1965 is finally going to get to see him buried in his hometown of San Diego with full military honors.
Deborah Crosby and her brothers will receive a casket carrying the remains of Lt. Commander Frederick P. Crosby on Friday in San Diego.
The U.S. military actively searches for missing service members from conflicts worldwide.
Crosby says she spent decades inquiring about the progress of her father’s case and providing anything to help in the search, including her aunt’s DNA.
Last year, military investigators found her father’s remains at the bottom of a fish pond in Vietnam.
