SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Officials are blaming synthetic marijuana for a spate of overdoses in downtown Syracuse this week.

The Post-Standard reports (https://bit.ly/2qW6XXD ) the staff at the Syracuse Rescue Mission says more than 15 people overdosed Wednesday near the homeless shelter. The cases inundated emergency services crews and hospital emergency rooms with patients made sick by the drug.

Syracuse police say they were dispatched to 15 overdose calls in 24 hours.

Officials with American Medical Response, a medical transportation service, say they sent out seven extra ambulances to deal with the calls for aid.

Authorities say a total of 18 people were treated at three Syracuse hospitals, and at least one of them reported treating more overdoses on Thursday.
