EAGLESVILLE, Pa. (AP) - The cause of death for a Pennsylvania doctor who died last year in jail couldn’t be determined, a coroner says.
David Kennedy, a pediatrician from Pennsburg, was being held at the Montgomery County jail in Eaglesville on child porn charges. The 48-year-old was found dead Dec. 18, a few weeks after his arrest.
An extensive set of tests were performed on Kennedy, officials say.
“We did quite a bit of testing and were not able to come up with anything substantial,” First Deputy Coroner Alex Balacki told WCAU-TV (https://bit.ly/2qilpKX). “There were no physical injuries and nothing of toxicological significance.”
The TV station reports that Kennedy was the 25th Montgomery County inmate to die in jail since 2007.
Some of the deaths have resulted in lawsuits, two of which ended in settlements that totaled $462,500.
One of the lawsuits asserted that jail staff ignored an inmate’s medical symptoms for four days before transporting her to a nearby hospital, where she died.
Eighteen inmates died from medical emergencies or illnesses, according to county records. Six inmate deaths were labeled “suicide, hanging” or “hanging in cell,” according to jail records.
The jail has declined to provide specifics about Kennedy’s death. Prosecutors say they are not investigating.
