SKOWHEGAN, Maine (AP) - Sen. Susan Collins is calling for “fanatical moderates” to serve as an antidote to extremes of both parties in Washington, D.C.
The Maine Republican who tries to work the middle in the Senate made the remarks Friday at the Margaret Chase Smith Library in Skowhegan.
The Morning Sentinel reports (https://bit.ly/2r6IfnJ ) that she called for “centrists” and “pragmatists” to be as active as the “energized far left” and “the aggressive right.”
She cited the legend that George Washington told Thomas Jefferson that the Senate was supposed to be a “cooling saucer” to hot legislation from the House. She said the current “hyper bipartisanship” has turned it into an overheated skillet.
She said she’s witnessed over nearly 20 years in the Senate “a withering of this culture of patience, perseverance and persuasion.”
