CEDARVILLE, Mich. (AP) - A community in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is honoring a pioneer in the movement to protect the natural world.
The third annual Les Cheneaux Aldo Leopold Festival runs June 1-4 in Mackinac County’s Clark Township. Leopold is known for his 1949 book “A Sand County Almanac,” which called for an ethic of caring for soil, water, plants and animals as well as people.
The budding naturalist spent summers at a family cottage on Marquette Island.
The festival will include documentary films and tours focused on birds, local geology and wildflowers. There will be hands-on activities such as building birdhouses and fly tying, plus a public discussion of changing Upper Peninsula forests.
Woods & Water Ecotours will offer guided paddling tours along the Les Cheneaux Islands shorelines.
