After more than 30 years of feelin’ the need for speed, Tom Cruise finally has a green light for a sequel to the 1986 blockbuster “Top Gun.”

The action movie star told an Australian TV show that he’s excited to get filming started in the coming year.

“It’s true,” Mr. Cruise told his interviewer, USA Today reported Tuesday. “I’m going to start probably in the next year. I know, it’s happening. It’s definitely happening.”

“You’re the first people I’ve said it to, you asked me and so I’m telling you,” he  told the “Sunrise” interviewer.

Mr. Cruise’s latest project, “The Mummy,” hits U.S. movie theaters on June 9.

Seemingly boundless in energy, Mr. Cruise, who turns 55 this July, has had a string of successes in various action-movie franchises in the past few years.

According to the Internet Movie Database, Mr. Cruise is presently at work filming the sixth installment in the “Mission Impossible” franchise, while Collider.com reported recently that he has agreed to work on a sequel to the 2014 sci-fi romp “Edge of Tomorrow” with co-star Emily Blunt.
