EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - The Evansville Regional Airport is planning a nearly $12.4 million redesign of its airport terminal that will include a single security line, an updated food service area and more amenities for families and children.
The Evansville Courier and Press (https://bit.ly/2qPmuZi ) reported that the first phase of construction is scheduled to begin this summer and is expected to take a year to complete.
The airport’s board viewed renderings Monday of the renovations from local architectural firm Hafer. The board also approved a $10 million loan with Old National Bank at the meeting.
A lack of food service options post-security is an inconvenience for passengers and has restricted food sales at the airport, airport officials said. A new restaurant will be created in the post-security area along with a redesigned seating area which will offer diners a view of the runway area. There will still be options to buy drink and food items before security, said Hafer president Jeff Justice.
The upgrades will also include airport administrative offices, a boardroom, outdoor canopies covering the road in front of the terminal, and a children’s play area with family restrooms and a nursing room.
New Transportation Safety Administration requirements for airports sparked the project, Justice said. One requirement prompted the move of the administrative offices since it’s currently behind where the new security line will be.
The state’s Regional Cities program has contributed $5 million to the project. The airport is funding the remainder of the cost.
The airport has had nearly 70,000 passengers board planes so far this year.
