WASHINGTON (AP) - AAA Mid-Atlantic is projecting that approximately one million Washington metro-area residents will take a trip of 50 miles or more during the Memorial Day weekend.

AAA says it’s the highest number of area residents planning to travel for the holiday in 12 years. AAA says the number of people traveling is about 16 percent of the Washington metro area’s population.

AAA says nearly nine in 10 people are planning to travel by vehicle rather than by plane, rail or bus.

AAA says that nationwide 39 million Americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more during the Memorial Day weekend.
