Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr is unsure if he’ll return for the NBA Finals, ESPN reported.

Kerr has not coached since April 23, dealing with pain related to back surgery from two years ago. He underwent a spinal leak procedure in early May to help manage the pain, but ESPN reported Monday he is still in discomfort.

Mike Brown has coached in Kerr’s place and the Warriors are 12-0 in the playoffs, sweeping the San Antonio Spurs Monday to advance to the finals.

Warriors owner Joe Lacob told ESPN that Kerr can take all the time he needs.

“He is a fantastic coach and a fantastic human being and a great friend,” Lacob said. “I told him the other day, ’I don’t even want to talk about or think about anything other than winning this championship. You can contribute in any way you can, and we’ll worry about the future in the future.’”

For the Spurs series, Kerr has had more of a presence around the team, chiming in at halftime with his observations and to encourage players. He even traveled to San Antonio for Games 3 and 4.

But Kerr said he is “day by day” with his progression.
