TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Lawmakers in New Jersey are moving ahead with a plan to bar employers from asking about salary history.

The state Assembly approved the measure 49-19 on Monday. Supporters say the proposed legislation is an attempt to close the pay gap between men and women.

Statistics vary but Democrats say women make around 80 cents for every dollar a man makes.

Democratic Assemblywoman Pamela Lampitt says that salary offers to new hires based on their previous salaries only perpetuate the wage gap. Supporters say the bill would help to level the playing field.

Opponents say the measure would ultimately hurt the hiring process.

The bill would amend New Jersey’s Law Against Discrimination if passed. It must be passed by the state Senate before it’s considered by Republican Gov. Chris Christie.
