PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Authorities in Rhode Island say an alleged gang member has been charged with participating in the shooting of a rival in Providence.
The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2q4dJvv ) that Alexander “Bird” Dejesus, of Chicopee, Massachusetts, pleaded not guilty Monday to assault with a dangerous weapon and other offenses in the Jan. 9 drive-by shooting. Dejesus’ lawyer argued against the $250,000 bail set by the judge.
Dejesus, an alleged member of the Bucket East street gang, was arrested last week after he and five others were indicted in the shooting that injured 22-year-old Mathew DePina.
Authorities say a vehicle driven by Joseph Segrain pulled alongside a car carrying DePina. They say Segrain opened fire on the vehicle, striking DePina multiple times. DePina survived.
Segrain pleaded not guilty to charges last week.
