DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) - A Davenport college is unveiling plans for more than $50 million in campus improvements that includes student housing, building upgrades and athletic fields.
The Quad-City Times (https://bit.ly/2q4zFSp ) reported Palmer College of Chiropractic unveiled preliminary plans at a community meeting Thursday. The college hopes to make the improvements over the next 10 years, but part of the plan is already being implemented with the construction of a $14 million athletic facility, said Aaron Christopher, the college’s vice chancellor.
Most of the improvements aim to modernize the campus in an effort to retain and recruit more students, he said.
“We hear from students now that their experience is the most important factor. It’s vital we provide that quality campus experience to maintain enrollment,” he said.
The college has been working with city staff since fall to create a long-term plan for the campus, he said.
“The city wanted to know what our overall plan was … not just (plans for) one building at a time,” Christopher said.
The proposal would require several city streets to be vacated. Some of the plans include development on properties - including residential homes and commercials buildings - that the college doesn’t own yet, Christopher said.
The plan is expected to go to City Council in July. Christopher said he hopes the plan will be finalized by September and work on some of the projects could begin in the next six months.
