OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The University of Nebraska Medical Center is asking Douglas County for $5 million for its Davis Global Center under construction in Omaha.
The County Board is considering giving $500,000 a year for 10 years, beginning in 2022, the Omaha World-Herald reported (https://bit.ly/2qChiYv ) Saturday. The money would come from inheritance taxes.
The payments would start after the county is done making $500,000 annual payments on its $5 million contribution to UNMC’s Buffett Cancer Center.
The board could vote as early as June on an agreement with UNMC that is expected to spell out details. The Davis Global Center will offer health care training, education and research with cutting-edge simulation technology, among other things. It’s being built at 42nd and Emile Streets on the UNMC campus and is expected to open in the fall of 2018.
The County Board’s measure to draft an agreement passed 3-1 in April, with Board Chair Mary Ann Borgeson and members Jim Cavanaugh and P.J. Morgan voting for it. Members Mike Boyle and Marc Kraft were absent, and Chris Rodgers abstained because of a conflict.
Board member Clare Duda was the lone “no” vote. He expressed reservations about giving Douglas County tax money to a state project when the county has pressing needs of its own.
“Great project, I’m thrilled that it’s happening,” Duda said at the April 25 board meeting. “I’m just not comfortable committing county funding towards it.”
The city of Omaha also is contributing to the center, committing about $10 million in bond revenue.
