MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - An effort is being delayed by Vermont Republicans to pursue a plan to save money by having teachers negotiate their health care plans directly with the state.
House GOP Minority Leader Don Turner says Republicans and Democratic House Speaker Mitzi Johnson reached a deal Tuesday to postpone a discussion and vote on Republican Gov. Phil Scott’s plan to Wednesday.
Scott’s proposal would have the state negotiate health care benefits for teachers across the state, rather than having teachers negotiate with their local school boards. Scott says the proposal could save $26 million.
Republicans want the full House to debate the proposal. Democratic leaders say they are willing to talk with Republicans about how they can find savings.
Last week the Senate rejected the proposal.
