BOSTON (AP) - A former Boston police officer has pleaded not guilty to using his professional credentials to illegally buy two handguns for civilian acquaintances, including one weapon that ended up in the hands of a reputed gang member.

The Boston Globe (https://bit.ly/2pryGhY ) reports that 37-year-old Adarbaad Karani was released on bond after entering his plea Monday in federal court.

Federal prosecutors say Karani bought a Glock model 27 .40 caliber pistol in 2014 and a Glock model 30S .45 caliber pistol in 2015. Authorities say on both occasions, Karani showed police identification card and said the guns were for official use.

State law bars civilians from purchasing those particular Glock models.

Karani’s lawyer said the gun purchases were legal and were made for friends legally permitted to have them.

Karani has resigned.
