MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission says a city owes it $800,000 after plans changed for a proposed medical school in a southern part of the state.

Martinsville Bulletin reports (https://bit.ly/2pTsOAf ) the commission announced Thursday the City of Martinsville owes the amount, which was given in a grant to create the College of Henricopolis School of Medicine.

In July 2015 the city received the money to launch the school, originally proposed as for-profit.

Commission executive committee member Virginia Delegate Danny Marshall says one reason for the grant recovery is due to the school’s plan switching to non-profit after being unable to find funding.

Commission spokesperson Jordan Butler says next week Martinsville and the school will be informed of the 30-day window to return the money or reach a payment agreement.
