ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has launched his $20?billion plan to fight homelessness.
Cuomo kicked off the program Thursday in New York City by ceremonially signing into law more than $2.5 billion for affordable housing.
Democrat Cuomo says the money, authorized by state lawmakers last month, will create and preserve more than 110,000 units of affordable and 6,000 units of supportive housing over five years.
Cuomo’s five-year strategy also directs billions of dollars toward other housing development including $125 million to senior housing and $7 billion to resources for homeless shelters.
Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie was also in attendance. Cuomo applauded the Bronx Democrat for demanding the state increase support for affordable housing during budget negotiations.
